Chapter 5
Youth culture—leisure pursuits and the cyberworld
Adolescents spend a great deal of time in leisure pursuits. Some of these are traditional, such as hanging out with friends, playing sports and games, and playing or making music. Since the 1950s, television viewing has taken up much leisure time, and a generation later computer games became popular. All these remain common leisure activities, but this century has also seen a massive change through information and communication technologies (ICT): mobile phones, and then smart phones, as well as desktop and laptop computers and tablets for accessing the internet. At the time of writing, social networking sites (SNS) play a major part in teenagers’ lives (Figure 6), and trends in internet use continue to change rapidly.
6. Entering adolescence, this 12-year-old already has many friends on Facebook.
